What Is a Local Pack?

A local pack is a search result feature that displays selected local businesses for a location-based query. It commonly shows business names, map positions, categories, contact details, opening information, reviews and profile actions. Search engines generate the feature from relevance, distance, prominence and the available business information.

Local relevance: Sydney's closely spaced suburbs create distinct local search areas, so a dental practice may receive different local pack results across nearby suburbs.

Key Takeaways About Local pack

  • It appears within search results, not only on a map.
  • Distance, relevance and prominence influence which businesses appear.
  • A local pack is not the same as organic search results.

How Local pack Works

A local pack is generated when a search engine identifies local intent in a query. The result may show a map, business profiles and actions such as calling, viewing directions or visiting a website. The displayed businesses can change when the searcher's location, query wording or device changes.

Related glossary terms: Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, SERP.

Search systems assess how closely each profile matches the query, how near the business is to the search location and how established the business appears across local signals. Google Business Profile information gives the search engine details about the business, while NAP consistency supports agreement between the business name, address and phone number across relevant sources. A local pack placement does not replace a website's organic ranking.

Expert Note

When we work on Business Profile Optimization, we check how a dental practice appears for relevant suburb and service searches. We review profile categories, service details, location signals and contact information. We also compare the profile view with the practice website, so the local pack presents consistent information.

A dental practice in Sydney may appear in the local pack when someone searches for a dentist near the practice. The result can display the practice profile, directions, phone option, services and website link together.
