What Is a Sitemap?

Sitemap is a file that lists the important URLs on a website and gives search engines information about how those pages relate to one another. A sitemap helps search engine crawlers discover pages, review changes and understand the website’s structure. It does not guarantee that listed pages will be indexed or rank.

Key Takeaways About Sitemap

  • A sitemap lists URLs for search engine discovery.
  • Sitemaps support crawling but do not control rankings.
  • A sitemap is not the same as website navigation.

Sitemap files usually contain website URLs in a format that search engine crawlers can read. The file may include details about page updates and the relationship between separate content areas. Website owners commonly submit the file through Google Search Console or reference it in the site’s robots.txt file.

Search engines can fetch the file and use its URLs as discovery suggestions. Crawlers still assess each page separately before deciding whether to crawl or index it. A sitemap can include pages that are difficult to find through internal links, although the file should reflect the website’s current, preferred URLs. An HTML sitemap is designed for people, while an XML sitemap is designed mainly for crawlers.

Expert Note

When we review a sitemap, we compare its URLs with the website’s live pages and preferred canonical URLs. We check for blocked, redirected or duplicate addresses because those entries can reduce the file’s practical value. Our team also checks whether important service and location pages remain discoverable.

Sitemap in Practice: A Real-World Example

For a Sydney dental practice, a sitemap may list pages for dental implants, emergency dentistry and each treatment location. The Technical SEO review checks that these URLs load correctly and match the pages the practice wants search engines to discover.
