What Is Impression Share?

Impression share is the proportion of eligible ad impressions that an advertising campaign receives. The metric compares served impressions with the impressions the campaign could have received under its targeting, bidding, budget and ad-rank conditions. In Google Ads, impression share helps show how often an eligible pay-per-click ad appears in available search opportunities.

Local relevance: Sydney's wide suburban spread and distinct local search areas can make location targeting materially affect which dental advertising auctions count as eligible.

Key Takeaways About Impression share

  • It measures visibility among eligible auctions, not all searches.
  • Budget, targeting, bids and ad rank can affect the result.
  • Impression share is not the same as click-through rate.

How Impression share Works

Impression share is calculated from impressions that an ad was eligible to receive. Google Ads considers the campaign's targeting settings, available search demand, budget, bid and ad rank. An ad may be eligible for a search but fail to appear when another factor limits its opportunity.

A lower result can point to different issues, so the metric needs context. Budget-related loss suggests that the campaign could not enter every suitable auction throughout the available demand. Rank-related loss points to competition, bid strength or ad quality. Reviewing these signals beside click-through rate and conversion data gives a clearer view of paid search performance.

Expert Note

When we review Impression share, we segment the result by campaign, location, device and search term themes. We then check whether lost opportunities relate to budget, ad rank or targeting before recommending changes. Our team also compares visibility with clicks and enquiries so the metric supports practical account decisions.

Impression share in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Sydney dental clinic may target searches for emergency dental appointments in selected suburbs. Its Impression share can fall when the campaign reaches its budget limit or when competing ads achieve stronger ad rank, even though the campaign remains eligible.
